“Is this something to ask about?” If you’ve wondered it, you’re welcome to ask. Here are a few friendly starting points.
You don’t have to figure it out alone. By around age two, children are typically using a growing vocabulary and putting two or more words together, such as “more milk.” If your child uses few words, isn’t combining words, or has trouble understanding familiar directions, a speech-language evaluation can help you understand their strengths and needs. Losing skills is also a reason to contact your pediatrician. Explore ASHA’s 19–24 month milestones ↗.
It can help us understand what’s making communication tricky. Speech clarity develops over time, and expectations depend on your child’s age and the sounds they’re using. Tell us what you notice at home, at school, or with friends—we can help you decide whether an evaluation makes sense.
You may have heard, “They’ll grow out of it and eventually talk.” If you’re concerned about your child’s speech or language, you don’t have to wait to ask for help.
We’re here to listen. Call 973-264-9509, email our team, or arrange a free 15-minute phone consultation. You don’t need a diagnosis to start the conversation.

Consider reaching out if your child avoids many foods or textures, has difficulty chewing, or mealtimes regularly feel stressful. Feeding support starts with understanding your child’s skills, health, and family routines. You don’t need to count a specific number of foods before asking for help.
Repeated coughing or choking, a wet-sounding voice after eating, or concerns about weight gain deserve a conversation with your child’s pediatrician and a feeding/swallowing specialist. These can involve swallowing safety, not just food preferences. Read about feeding and swallowing signs from ASHA ↗.
Do getting dressed, using utensils, drawing, or joining in play feel especially hard for your child? Share what you’re noticing with us. Our OT team can talk with you about everyday activities, your child’s strengths, and whether an evaluation would be helpful.
Start with a free 15-minute phone consultation. We’ll listen to your questions and talk about possible next steps. If an evaluation is recommended, we’ll explain what to expect. Share your child’s interests, routines, and what matters most to your family—your perspective is part of the conversation.
